Tarragona combines UNESCO Roman ruins, a medieval cathedral, and Costa Daurada beaches 100 km southwest of Barcelona. Plan your stay here.
Tarragona sits on the Costa Daurada in southern Catalonia, roughly 100 km southwest of Barcelona. The city served as the Roman provincial capital of Hispania Citerior — known then as Tarraco — and its ancient infrastructure remains largely intact above ground. The old town holds a UNESCO World Heritage amphitheatre built into the cliff face above the sea, a well-preserved Roman circus, a 2nd-century aqueduct called Les Ferreres standing 27 metres tall, and a cathedral consecrated in 1331 that blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. The medieval walls enclosing the upper city follow the line of the original Roman ramparts.
Visitors arrive for three main reasons: Roman archaeology, beach access, and Catalan gastronomy. The Rambla Nova runs parallel to the sea and connects the modern lower town to the historic upper quarter. Tarragona's port area — the Serrallo district — supplies fresh seafood to a cluster of fish restaurants within walking distance of the waterfront. The city also hosts the Concurs de Castells every two years, a competitive human-tower festival that draws teams from across Catalonia.
Tarragona has a mid-size airport at Reus, 13 km to the west, with seasonal European routes. High-speed AVE trains connect Tarragona to Barcelona in under an hour and to Madrid in roughly three hours. The average July temperature sits around 25 °C, making summer the peak season, though the Roman sites are open year-round.
