Salou sits on the Costa Daurada in Catalonia, roughly 110 km southwest of Barcelona. The city built its modern identity around tourism — PortAventura World, one of Europe's largest theme park resorts, opened here in 1995 and remains the primary draw for families from across the continent. Beyond the parks, Salou's coastline stretches along several beaches, with Platja Llarga and the central Platja de Salou offering calm Mediterranean waters and well-maintained promenades.

The visitor mix is broad. British, French, and German package tourists have dominated since the 1970s, drawn by reliable summer sun and direct charter connections to Reus Airport — just 7 km from the town centre. Younger crowds arrive for the annual Rally Catalunya and circuit events at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya's nearby cousin, Circuit de Catalunya. The old town retains a modest historic quarter around the Torre Vella, a 16th-century watchtower that once guarded the coast against pirate raids.

Salou's accommodation ranges from large all-inclusive beach hotels to smaller apartment-style properties inland. The peak season runs June through September, when temperatures average 28–30 °C and the town's population swells significantly. Reus Airport handles seasonal routes from across northern Europe, making Salou one of the more accessible coastal destinations in Spain without routing through Barcelona El Prat.
