About Monasterio de Rodilla

Monasterio de Rodilla is a small municipality in the province of Burgos, Castile and León, northern Spain. It sits on the high Castilian plateau roughly 30 kilometres northeast of Burgos city, near the N-1 motorway corridor that links Madrid to the Basque Country. The village takes its name from a medieval monastery — the Romanesque hermitage of Santa María del Manzano stands nearby and dates to the 12th century, making it one of the older ecclesiastical structures in this stretch of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. The surrounding landscape is open cereal farmland cut by shallow river valleys, typical of the Burgos meseta at around 900 metres elevation.

Visitors are primarily pilgrims walking the Camino Francés, cyclists passing through on the N-1 corridor, and travellers with an interest in rural Romanesque architecture. The broader Burgos province draws attention for its Gothic cathedral — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 — and the nearby archaeological site of Atapuerca, also UNESCO-listed. Monasterio de Rodilla itself offers a quieter base than Burgos city, with access to the same regional cuisine: roast lamb (lechazo), morcilla de Burgos, and local Ribera del Duero wines.

The municipality recorded a population of under 100 residents in recent census data. Road access is straightforward via the A-1 autopista; the nearest rail station is in Burgos, approximately 35 kilometres to the southwest.
