Burgos sits on the high Castilian plateau in northern Spain, 240 km north of Madrid along the A-1 motorway. Founded in 884 as a frontier fortress, the city grew into the medieval capital of the Crown of Castile. Its Gothic cathedral — begun in 1221 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 — dominates the skyline with twin spires rising 84 metres. The old city also holds the Royal Monastery of Las Huelgas, founded in 1187, and the Museum of Human Evolution, which opened in 2010 to house fossils from the nearby Atapuerca archaeological sites.
Visitors come for three main reasons: medieval heritage, the Camino de Santiago, and Castilian gastronomy. Burgos sits on the French Way pilgrimage route, making it a major rest stop for walkers heading west toward Santiago de Compostela. The city is equally known for morcilla — a local black pudding made with rice — and lechazo, slow-roasted suckling lamb. Wine travellers use Burgos as a base for the Ribera del Duero DO, whose vineyards start roughly 50 km to the south.
The climate is continental and harsh: summers are warm but short, winters are cold with frequent frost from November through March. Average July temperatures reach around 22 °C; January averages hover near 3 °C. The city's main airport is Burgos Airport (BU), though most international travellers arrive via Madrid Barajas (MAD) or Bilbao Airport (BIO), both under two hours by road.
