About Redondela
Redondela
Redondela sits at the southern tip of the Ría de Vigo in Galicia, Spain, defined above all by two 19th-century railway viaducts that arch over the town centre at heights of roughly 40 metres. The Viaducto de Redondela and the adjacent Viaducto de Pontevedra — both built for the Vigo–Pontevedra rail line — give the town a silhouette found nowhere else in Galicia. Below them, a compact old quarter holds the Praza da Constitución, the church of Santiago, and several granite-fronted buildings typical of the Rías Baixas. The town stands on the estuary where the Alvedosa and Maceiras rivers meet the ría, placing beaches such as Cesantes and Arealonga within five kilometres.
The Camino Português — the Portuguese Route of the Camino de Santiago — passes directly through Redondela, making it a natural overnight stop for pilgrims walking from Tui or Porto toward Santiago de Compostela, roughly 110 kilometres to the north. This steady flow of walkers keeps a practical network of small hotels, guesthouses, and cafés operating year-round. The town also hosts one of Galicia's most photographed Corpus Christi processions each June, when streets are carpeted with flowers and greenery.
Redondela is connected by Renfe regional trains to Vigo (12 minutes) and Pontevedra (20 minutes), making it a workable base for exploring the Rías Baixas without staying in either city. The municipal market on Calle Isidoro Queimaliños opens Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
