Vigo sits on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, in northwestern Spain, at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo — one of the deepest natural harbors on the Iberian Peninsula. The city of roughly 300,000 people is Spain's largest fishing port by volume, and its seafood industry shapes everything from the working waterfront to the restaurant menus in the old quarter, A Pedra. The historic center climbs steeply from the port, with narrow granite streets, the Casco Vello neighborhood, and the Castro hill fort offering views across the estuary to the Cíes Islands — a protected national park accessible by ferry in under 30 minutes.

Visitors come for several distinct reasons. Beach travelers use Vigo as a base for the Cíes Islands, whose white-sand beaches consistently rank among Europe's cleanest. Culture-focused travelers explore the Museo do Mar de Galicia in the Alcabre district and the contemporary art space at the Marco museum in the city center. Pilgrims and walkers pass through on the Coastal Camino de Santiago route, which runs directly through the city before continuing north toward Pontevedra and Santiago de Compostela, roughly 156 km away. The city also draws cross-border visitors from nearby Porto, Portugal — approximately 120 km south via the A-3 motorway.

Vigo's airport, Peinador, connects to Madrid, Barcelona, and several European cities year-round. The ferry to the Cíes Islands runs from April through October, with schedules managed by Naviera Mar de Ons.
