About Cangas de Morrazo

Cangas de Morrazo

Cangas de Morrazo occupies the southern tip of the Morrazo Peninsula in Galicia, flanked by the Ría de Vigo to the south and the Ría de Pontevedra to the north. A passenger ferry crosses the Ría de Vigo to Vigo city in roughly 20 minutes — making Cangas one of the few coastal towns in Spain where visitors sleep beside the water yet reach a major urban centre without a car. The municipality covers 38 km² and holds around 26,000 residents spread across the main port town and smaller parishes inland.

The draw is straightforward: the Rías Baixas coastline here produces some of Europe's most prized mussels and barnacles (percebes), sold fresh at the Lonja fish market on the harbour most mornings. Praia de Rodeira and Praia de Nerga are the two most visited beaches — Nerga borders the Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia, whose islands are visible on clear days just offshore. Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago coastal variant pass through the peninsula, adding a walking-tourism layer alongside summer beach visitors and Vigo day-trippers.

Most accommodation sits within 500 metres of the ferry terminal in the port district. The A-55 motorway connects Cangas to Pontevedra in under 30 minutes by road. High season runs July–August; shoulder months of May, June, and September offer lower prices and the same Atlantic seafood.
