About Salamanca

Salamanca sits in western Spain's Castile and León region, roughly 200 km northwest of Madrid. The city's sandstone buildings glow amber at dusk — a quality that earned it the nickname La Dorada. Its university, founded in 1218, is one of Europe's oldest and still draws students from across the world, giving the city a distinctly young, academic character alongside its medieval core. The Plaza Mayor, completed in 1755, anchors daily life and is widely regarded as one of Spain's finest baroque squares.

Visitors come for the architecture, the language schools, and the food scene centered on tapas bars along Calle Van Dyck and the market at Plaza del Mercado. The old city holds two cathedrals side by side — the Romanesque Old Cathedral from the 12th century and the Gothic-Baroque New Cathedral begun in 1513. UNESCO designated the old city a World Heritage Site in 1988. Weekend visitors from Madrid make it a common short break, and the city draws steady international tourism year-round.

Salamanca's main train station connects to Madrid Chamartín in roughly 1.5 hours by Alvia service. The city's altitude is approximately 800 metres, producing hot summers and cold winters — pack layers for visits between November and March.
