About Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa: Medieval Capital on the Parakrama Samudra Shore

Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka's second ancient capital from the 11th to 13th centuries, replacing Anuradhapura after the Chola invasion of 993 CE. The medieval city sits beside the Parakrama Samudra, a vast irrigation reservoir engineered by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century — still supplying water to surrounding paddy fields today. UNESCO inscribed the ancient city in 1982, and the compact archaeological park preserves the Gal Vihara rock temple, the Vatadage circular relic house, and the Rankot Vihara dagoba standing 55 metres tall.

Where to Stay in Polonnaruwa

Most hotels cluster along Habarana Road and around New Town, roughly 2 km north of the museum entrance. Budget guesthouses sit within cycling distance of the park gates; mid-range properties near the lake offer garden views across the reservoir. Polonnaruwa is a common overnight stop on the Cultural Triangle circuit linking Sigiriya (38 km north-west) and Dambulla (55 km west).

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Colombo to Polonnaruwa by train takes approximately 5 hours from Colombo Fort station; buses from Kandy run about 3 hours.
  • Park access: The archaeological site charges a separate admission fee; a single ticket covers most monuments.
  • Cycling: Bicycle hire near the main gate is the standard way to cover the 5 km monument trail.
  • Climate: The dry season runs from May to September — the cooler months of December to January also see low rainfall.
