About Trincomalee

Trincomalee: Deep Harbour, Ancient Temples, and Whale-Watch Seasons

Trincomalee sits on Sri Lanka's northeast coast, sheltered by one of the world's largest natural deepwater harbours — a bay stretching roughly 35 km in length. The city's recorded history runs to at least the 3rd century BCE; the Koneswaram Temple, rebuilt atop Swami Rock after colonial-era demolition, marks the headland where the rocky promontory drops 130 m into the sea. Fort Frederick, constructed by the Portuguese in 1623 and later held by the Dutch and British, stands within walking distance of the temple. The Nilaveli and Uppuveli beach strips lie 4–16 km north of the centre, offering calm waters from May through September.

Where to Stay in Trincomalee

Most hotels cluster along Uppuveli Beach, roughly 6 km north of the town centre, and near the Inner Harbour ferry point. Budget guesthouses share the Uppuveli strip with mid-range beach resorts. Whale-watching season peaks from March to April when blue whales pass through Trincomalee Bay — book accommodation well ahead during this window.

Practical Tips

  • Currency: Sri Lankan rupee (LKR); ATMs are available near the bus stand on Central Road.
  • Diving: The bay holds several World War II wrecks, including HMS Hermes, sunk in April 1942 and lying at 57 m depth.
