About Jaffna
Jaffna: Tamil Heritage at Sri Lanka's Northern Tip
Jaffna sits at the northern end of Sri Lanka, roughly 400 km from Colombo, separated from mainland India by the 64 km Palk Strait. The city anchors the Jaffna Peninsula and holds the country's densest concentration of Tamil Hindu culture. The Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, rebuilt in its present form in the 18th century, draws tens of thousands of pilgrims during its 25-day chariot festival each August. The Jaffna Fort, constructed by the Portuguese in 1618 and later expanded by the Dutch, stands largely intact near the lagoon and remains one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in South Asia.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster along Hospital Road and the Kasturiya Road corridor, within walking distance of the fort and the central market. Guesthouses in the Chundikuli neighbourhood offer quieter surroundings a short tuk-tuk ride from the main sites. A₹ causeway road via Elephant Pass connects Jaffna to the rest of Sri Lanka by land; the Colombo–Jaffna express train covers the route in roughly 6–7 hours.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: The Colombo Fort–Jaffna train runs daily; book seats at least a week ahead during public holidays.
- Local transport: Tuk-tuks and bicycles are the standard way to reach the islands of Nainativu and Kayts via ferry from Kurikadduwan.
- Weather: The northeast monsoon (October–January) brings heavy rain; February–April offers the driest conditions.
- Currency: Sri Lankan rupees; ATMs are available on Hospital Road but can run short on weekends.
