About Sigiriya
Sigiriya: Ancient Rock Fortress of the Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya, in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, is defined by a single 200-metre volcanic rock that rises from the surrounding jungle plain. King Kashyapa I built a palace complex atop the rock between 477 and 495 CE, leaving behind frescoed gallery walls, mirror-polished ramparts, and landscaped water gardens at the base. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1982. The town itself sits roughly 170 km northeast of Colombo and 30 km north of Dambulla, placing it at the heart of the Cultural Triangle alongside Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters along the road between the entrance gate and the village of Inamaluwa. Properties range from guesthouses under 20 USD per night to mid-range resorts with pool views toward the rock. Staying within 3 km of the gate allows early-morning access before tour groups arrive — the climb takes 1–1.5 hours.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses run from Dambulla (45 min); private tuk-tuks from Habarana take about 20 minutes.
- Entry fee: Foreign visitors pay approximately 30 USD at the Cultural Triangle ticket office.
- Best time: January–April offers dry mornings; the rock face can be slippery after rain.
- Dress code: Shoulders and knees should be covered at the site entrance.
