About Grindelwald

Grindelwald: Alpine Base Beneath the Eiger's North Face

Grindelwald sits at 1,034 m in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, directly below the 3,970 m Eiger north face — one of the most photographed rock walls in the Alps. The village anchors the Jungfrau Region, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage area since 2001. Two distinct ski areas, Grindelwald-First and the linked Kleine Scheidegg–Männlichen circuit, give winter visitors over 160 km of marked pistes. In summer, the same lifts serve hikers heading toward the Bachalpsee lake at 2,265 m and the Eiger Trail, which traces the base of the north face for 6 km.

Where to Stay in Grindelwald

Hotels cluster along the main Dorfstrasse and on the quieter southern slopes above the village. Properties on the upper terraces face north toward the Wetterhorn (3,692 m) and offer direct views of glacial snowfields. The Grindelwald Terminal gondola station, opened in 2020, connects the village to the Eiger Express cable car, cutting travel time to Jungfraujoch (3,454 m) to around 45 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct trains run from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald in approximately 35 minutes on the Bernese Oberland Railway.
  • Swiss Travel Pass covers the train from Interlaken; mountain lifts require a separate Jungfrau Travel Pass.
  • Season: Ski season runs mid-December to mid-April; summer hiking peaks July–September.
  • Altitude: Pack layers — evening temperatures drop sharply even in August.
