About Interlaken

Interlaken: Between Two Lakes in the Bernese Oberland

Interlaken sits on a narrow glacial plain between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Swiss canton of Bern, at 568 m above sea level. The Höheweg, the town's central promenade, frames a direct view of the Eiger (3,967 m), Mönch, and Jungfrau — a skyline that draws visitors year-round. Two rail stations — Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost — anchor the town and connect directly to the Jungfraujoch rack railway, which reaches 3,454 m and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site corridor.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels concentrate between the two stations along Höheweg or in the quieter residential streets off Rugenparkstrasse. The Unterseen quarter, west of the Aare canal, offers smaller guesthouses within a 10-minute walk of the West station. Adventure sport operators — paragliding, canyoning, skydiving — cluster near Ost station. The Swiss Travel Pass covers all trains into and out of Interlaken, including services to Grindelwald (25 min) and Lauterbrunnen (20 min).

Practical Tips

  • Season: July–August and December–February are peak; shoulder months (May, October) offer lower hotel rates.
  • Rail access: Zürich to Interlaken Ost takes approximately 2 hours by InterCity train.
  • Currency: Swiss franc (CHF); most hotels accept cards, but mountain huts operate cash-only.
  • Altitude: Base town requires no acclimatisation, but trips to Jungfraujoch can cause altitude discomfort.
