About Ko Mak
Ko Mak: A Car-Free Island in Trat Province
Ko Mak lies in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 30 km southwest of the mainland district of Laem Ngop in Trat Province. The island covers about 16 sq km and has no traffic lights, no large resort chains, and no motorized public transport — a combination that draws travelers seeking slower-paced beach time over the crowds of Ko Samui or Ko Chang (the latter sits 45 km to the northwest). Two bays anchor most stays: Ao Suan Yai on the northwest, lined with coconut plantations dating to the early 20th century, and Ao Kao on the southwest, where shallow turquoise water makes it suitable for wading at low tide.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Accommodation on Ko Mak runs from fan-cooled bungalows to mid-range beachfront resorts, all independently owned. Bicycle and motorbike rental shops cluster near the main pier at Ao Nid. A sealed ring road circles most of the island in under 30 minutes by scooter.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries depart from Laem Ngop pier; journey time is roughly 1.5–2 hours depending on the service.
- Best season: November to April brings dry weather; avoid May–October when swells can cancel ferry crossings.
- Cash: ATMs are limited — carry sufficient Thai baht from the mainland.
- Snorkeling: Gear rental is available at Ao Kao; the reef at Ko Rayang (a short longtail boat trip away) offers clearer visibility.
