About Koh Samui

The best bases on Koh Samui are Chaweng, the main beach strip with the widest hotel range; Bophut, where Fisherman's Village offers quieter dining along a narrow walking street; and Lamai, a calmer alternative with good mid-range options. Samui Airport sits near the northeast coast, roughly 10 minutes from Chaweng by taxi. Most visitors stay four to seven nights.

Where to Stay on Koh Samui

Chaweng is the largest and most developed beach zone, running nearly 7 km along the east coast. It suits first-time visitors and those who want beach clubs, night markets, and the densest concentration of hotels. Bophut, on the north shore, centres on a preserved Chinese-Portuguese fishing village. The Friday Night Walking Street draws food stalls and craft vendors from around the island. Lamai, south of Chaweng, attracts repeat visitors who want a slower pace with Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations nearby. The southwest, around Nathon (the ferry pier) and Taling Ngam, suits those looking for hillside villas away from the party belt.

Getting Around

Songthaews — shared pick-up trucks — run the ring road connecting Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, and Nathon for a fixed 50–100 THB per leg. Motorcycle taxis and app-based cabs supplement them. Renting a scooter gives access to interior viewpoints like Khao Hua Jook pagoda. Ferries to Koh Phangan (30 min) and Koh Tao (two hours) depart from Nathon and Maenam piers daily.

Practical Tips

  • Weather: The Gulf of Thailand monsoon hits Koh Samui November–January; the island stays drier than Phuket in May–October.
  • Airport: Samui Airport (USM) is privately operated; fares are higher than Suvarnabhumi routes — book at least three weeks ahead for competitive prices.
  • Currency: ATMs charge a 220 THB foreign-card fee per withdrawal; carry sufficient baht after the first transaction.
  • Transfers: Metered taxis do not operate island-wide; agree on a price before boarding any unmarked cab.
