Kata is a beach district on the southwestern coast of Phuket, Thailand, known for its clear waters, consistent surf, and a calmer atmosphere compared to the busier Patong area. It attracts families, surfers, and travelers seeking a quieter base without sacrificing access to the island's main attractions.
Kata is home to two main beaches: Kata Yai (Big Kata) and Kata Noi (Little Kata). Kata Yai is the larger of the two, offering a long arc of sand with several water sports operators, beachside restaurants, and sunbed rentals. Kata Noi sits just south and tends to be quieter, making it a preferred spot for those who want fewer crowds. Between May and October, the southwest monsoon brings stronger swells, making Kata one of Phuket's better spots for beginner and intermediate surfing. Several surf schools operate along the beach during this season.
Kata's hillside viewpoint — often called Kata Viewpoint or Karon Viewpoint — offers a panoramic view across Kata Noi, Kata Yai, and Karon beaches. It is a popular stop for both sunrise and sunset visits. The district is also well-positioned for day trips: the iconic Big Buddha statue sits roughly 10 minutes by road, while Wat Chalong, one of Phuket's most important Buddhist temples, is similarly close. Old Phuket Town, with its Sino-Portuguese architecture and street food scene, is accessible within 20–30 minutes by car or scooter.
