About York
York: Roman Walls, a Gothic Minster, and 2,000 Years of History
York stands on the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, roughly 200 miles north of London. Founded as the Roman fortress Eboracum in 71 AD, the city retains 3.4 km of intact medieval walls — the longest in England. York Minster, completed in 1472, holds the largest collection of medieval stained glass in the world. The Shambles, a 14th-century street of timber-framed buildings, draws visitors year-round, while the Jorvik Viking Centre reconstructs a Norse settlement excavated beneath Coppergate in the 1970s.
Where to Stay in York
Hotels cluster in three zones. The city centre — inside the walls — puts guests within walking distance of the Minster and the Shambles. Micklegate and the southern riverbank offer independent hotels and Georgian townhouse conversions. Clifton and Skeldergate, just north and south of the river, provide quieter options with a short walk or bus ride to the core. Budget travellers find the most competitive rates in the outer ring beyond Bootham Bar.
Practical Tips
- Rail access: Lner and CrossCountry services connect York station to London King's Cross in under 2 hours and to Edinburgh in roughly 2.5 hours.
- Getting around: The walled centre is compact and walkable; most hotels are within 15 minutes on foot of the Minster.
- Timing: The York Viking Festival runs each February; the York Christmas Market occupies St Nicholas Fair from mid-November.
- Parking: Driving into the centre is restricted; Park & Ride sites on the A19 and A64 are the practical option for car travellers.
