Twenty-four canvas-walled suites and shelters make up Collective Retreats Governors Island, pitched on the former military parade grounds at 825 Gresham Rd, an eight-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan. Skyline views stretch across the harbor toward the Statue of Liberty without a single high-rise on the island itself.

Rooms run on solar power, with wood-burning stoves for cool nights and communal firepits after dark. The island closes to the public each evening, leaving overnight guests the rare experience of Manhattan's skyline with no traffic and no crowds.
