About Cabo Polonio

Cabo Polonio: Remote Dunes and Atlantic Wilderness

Cabo Polonio sits on a narrow headland in Rocha Department, roughly 270 km east of Montevideo along Uruguay's Atlantic coast. No paved road reaches the village — visitors transfer to high-clearance trucks at a roadside stop on Ruta 10 and cross 9 km of shifting sand dunes. The settlement has no central electricity grid; solar panels and candles light most of the roughly 90 permanent structures. A working lighthouse, built in 1881, marks the cape and remains the tallest structure on site.

Where to Stay and Who Visits

Accommodation runs to rustic guesthouses, eco-cabins, and a handful of small posadas clustered around the lighthouse and the South Atlantic sea lion colony — one of the largest on the Uruguayan coast, with several hundred animals year-round. Visitors are largely independent travelers, surfers, and nature-focused tourists from Argentina, Brazil, and Europe who accept off-grid conditions in exchange for empty beaches and dark skies. The peak season runs December through February; outside those months many properties close.

Practical Tips

  • Access: Board the dune trucks at the Ruta 10 checkpoint, approximately 6 km south of Castillos; round-trip fare is paid on site.
  • Power: Carry a power bank — charging options are scarce even in posadas with solar.
  • Season: March and April offer lighter crowds, mild temperatures around 18 °C, and most guesthouses still open.
