Punta del Este sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 140 km east of Montevideo via Ruta 1. The city divides cleanly into two coastlines: the calmer Playa Mansa faces the estuary on the west, while Playa Brava — marked by the 1982 sculpture La Mano (Dedos) emerging from the sand — takes the full force of Atlantic swells on the east. The nearby village of José Ignacio, 35 km northeast, draws a quieter crowd seeking low-rise boutique stays and open-fire cooking.
