About Punta del Este
Punta del Este: Uruguay's Atlantic Peninsula Resort City
Punta del Este sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 140 km east of Montevideo via Ruta 1. The city divides cleanly into two coastlines: the calmer Playa Mansa faces the estuary on the west, while Playa Brava — marked by the 1982 sculpture La Mano (Dedos) emerging from the sand — takes the full force of Atlantic swells on the east. That contrast defines the city's character: sheltered family beaches on one side, surf and spectacle on the other.
Argentine and Brazilian visitors account for the majority of summer arrivals between December and February, when the population swells from roughly 10,000 permanent residents to over 400,000. The Puerto neighborhood anchors the marina and most of the upscale restaurants; Gorlero Avenue runs the length of the peninsula as the main commercial spine. The nearby village of José Ignacio, 35 km northeast, draws a quieter crowd seeking low-rise boutique stays and open-fire cooking.
Practical Tips
- Season: High season runs December–February; shoulder months (March, November) offer lower hotel rates and manageable crowds.
- Getting there: Capitán de Corbeta Carlos A. Curbelo International Airport (PDP) is 22 km from the city center.
- Currency: Uruguayan peso; US dollars are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants.
- Transport: Rental cars or taxis are practical — local bus routes are limited between beach zones.
