Hue: Imperial Capital on the Perfume River

Hue served as Vietnam's imperial capital from 1802 to 1945 under the Nguyen Dynasty, and the walled Imperial Citadel — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 — remains the city's defining landmark. The citadel encloses the Forbidden Purple City, once reserved exclusively for the emperor, and covers roughly 520 hectares on the north bank of the Perfume River (Sông Hương). Seven royal tombs are scattered across the hills south of the city, with Tomb of Minh Mang and Tomb of Tu Duc drawing the most visitors.
