About Cat Ba
Cat Ba: Island Gateway to Lan Ha Bay
Cat Ba Island, the largest island in Ha Long Bay's southern cluster, sits 45 km east of Hai Phong and roughly 20 km south of Ha Long City. The island spans 285 km² and anchors Cat Ba National Park, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve protecting the critically endangered Cat Ba langur — fewer than 80 individuals survive in the wild. Lan Ha Bay, on the island's eastern flank, offers some 300 karst islets with calmer waters and fewer crowds than the main Ha Long tourist corridors.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster along Cat Ba Town seafront, a compact strip of guesthouses, 3-star hotels, and boutique lodges facing the harbour. A smaller set of eco-stays operates inside or near the national park boundary. Kayaking, rock climbing on Butterfly Valley walls, and overnight boat tours depart directly from Cat Ba Town pier. Hospital Cave, a three-storey wartime shelter carved into limestone during the 1960s Vietnam War, lies 10 minutes by motorbike from town.
Practical Tips
- Getting here: Ferries from Hai Phong's Tuan Chau pier run several times daily; the crossing takes 45–75 minutes depending on route.
- Best months: October to April brings dry weather and cooler temperatures; July–August is peak season with higher room rates.
- Transport on-island: Motorbike rental starts around 120,000 VND/day; taxis serve the main town.
- Cash: ATMs are available in Cat Ba Town; many smaller guesthouses do not accept cards.
