About Sapa

Sapa: Rice Terraces, Hill Tribes, and Fansipan's Shadow

Sapa sits at 1,500 metres elevation in Lào Cai Province, northwestern Vietnam, 380 km from Hanoi. The town overlooks the Muong Hoa Valley, where H'mong and Dao farmers have carved rice terraces into the Hoàng Liên Son range over centuries. Fansipan — at 3,143 m, the highest peak in Indochina — rises directly southwest and is accessible by cable car from Hàm Rồng Mountain station in under 20 minutes.

Visitors arrive for trekking, ethnic minority village stays, and the terraced landscape, which peaks visually during harvest season in September–October. Cat Cat village, 2 km from the town centre, and Ta Van, 12 km into the valley, are two of the most-visited H'mong settlements. Temperatures average 15–18 °C in summer and can drop below freezing in January, making layering essential year-round.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Overnight train from Hanoi to Lào Cai station takes 8–9 hours; buses then connect to Sapa town, 38 km uphill.
  • Best season: September–October for golden terraces; March–May for clear skies and fewer crowds.
  • Altitude note: Pack warm layers regardless of month — evening temperatures fall sharply even in July.
  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND); ATMs available in Sapa town centre near the market square.
