About Ha Giang
Ha Giang: Vietnam's Northern Frontier
Ha Giang province sits at Vietnam's northernmost tip, sharing a border with China's Yunnan province. The region centers on the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark recognized in 2010 covering roughly 2,356 km². The plateau's layered limestone peaks, some rising above 1,600 m, define the landscape across four districts: Quản Bạ, Yên Minh, Đồng Văn, and Mèo Vạc. The Mã Pí Lèng Pass between Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc drops nearly 1,000 m into the Nho Quế River canyon — one of the most dramatic road stretches in Southeast Asia.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses cluster in Ha Giang city, the provincial capital, used as a base before the 150 km loop north. Đồng Văn town offers smaller homestays near the 19th-century Đồng Văn Old Quarter. Mèo Vạc has a handful of mid-range properties suited for splitting the loop into two days.
Practical Tips
- Access: Ha Giang city lies 320 km north of Hanoi; buses run from Mỹ Đình Bus Station (roughly 6–7 hours).
- Permits: Foreign visitors require a free registration stamp at the Ha Giang police checkpoint before entering the plateau loop.
- Best season: October–November for buckwheat flowers; March for cherry and plum blossoms in Quản Bạ.
- Transport: The loop road requires a motorbike or hired driver — no public bus serves the full circuit.
