About Hoi An
Hoi An: Ancient Port Town on Vietnam's Central Coast
Hoi An sits on the Thu Bon River in Quảng Nam Province, roughly 30 km south of Da Nang. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, its Ancient Town preserves 1,000-plus merchant houses, assembly halls, and covered bridges built between the 15th and 19th centuries — when Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch traders made it one of Southeast Asia's busiest ports. The Japanese Covered Bridge, constructed around 1593, remains the most photographed structure in the quarter.
Where to Stay in Hoi An
Most visitors base themselves in one of three zones. The Ancient Town puts guests within walking distance of the Thu Bon riverfront lantern markets and tailor shops on Tran Phu Street. An Bang Beach, 4 km east, draws travelers who want sand alongside heritage. Cam Nam Island, just across the river, offers quieter guesthouses at lower price points. Properties range from heritage boutique hotels inside restored merchant houses to mid-range resorts lining the coastal road toward Cua Dai Beach.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Da Nang International Airport is 30 km north; taxis take about 45 minutes.
- Entrance tickets: A combined Ancient Town ticket (required to enter most heritage sites) costs around 120,000 VND.
- Best timing: February to April brings dry weather; the Lantern Festival falls on the 14th of each lunar month.
- Getting around: Cycling is the standard mode within town; rentals run roughly 30,000–50,000 VND per day.
