About Hoi An

The best bases in Hoi An are the Ancient Town, where UNESCO-listed merchant houses, tailors, and lantern-lit streets sit within walking distance of everything; An Bang Beach, 4 km east for a quieter, sea-facing stay; and Cam Nam island, just across the Thu Bon River for local pricing and low-rise guesthouses. Most visitors stay three to five nights.

Where to Stay

The Ancient Town (inscribed by UNESCO in 1999) is the most-requested address: the Japanese Covered Bridge, Assembly Halls, and the night market are all walkable. Motorbikes are restricted after 8 am, keeping lanes calm for pedestrians. An Bang Beach suits travelers who want sand in the morning and the Old Town at night — a xe om or bicycle covers the 4 km in under 15 minutes. Cam Nam island, reached by a short footbridge, offers boutique homestays and guesthouses at lower rates than the Ancient Town, with a five-minute walk back to the lantern district.

Getting Around

Hoi An has no city bus network. Bicycles — available from most properties for free or around 30,000 VND per day — handle the flat terrain well. Da Nang International Airport sits 30 km north, roughly 30–40 minutes by taxi or Grab. The nearest train station is Da Nang, linked by road transfer.

Practical Tips

  • Rainy season: October and November bring heavy rains and periodic flooding in the Ancient Town; pack waterproof sandals.
  • Tailoring: Allow at least 48 hours for custom garments; shops concentrate on Tran Phu Street and Le Loi Street.
  • Cash: ATMs cluster near the central market on Tran Phu; many small vendors do not accept cards.
  • Heritage ticket: A combined ticket (around 120,000 VND) covers five Ancient Town heritage sites and is required for entry.
