About Da Lat
Da Lat: Vietnam's Highland Flower Capital
Da Lat sits at 1,500 metres in the Lâm Đồng Province of Vietnam's Central Highlands, roughly 300 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. French colonial planners established the town in 1893 as a hill-station retreat, and the legacy shows: Domaine de Marie Church, the Da Lat Railway Station (built 1938), and dozens of pastel villas remain intact along the slopes. The surrounding plateau produces 70% of Vietnam's cut flowers — roses, hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums blanket the hillsides year-round, alongside strawberry and artichoke farms that supply the rest of the country.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around Xuan Huong Lake, a reservoir at the city centre created by a dam in 1919. The Hoa Binh district and the lanes off Nguyen Chi Thanh Street hold budget guesthouses and mid-range boutique properties. Larger resort hotels occupy the pine-forested slopes north toward Tuyen Lam Lake, 5 km from the centre.
Practical Tips
- Climate: Average temperature stays between 15–24 °C; pack a light layer even in summer.
- Getting there: Lien Khuong Airport handles flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; the ride to the centre takes 30 minutes by taxi.
- Getting around: Motorbike rental costs roughly 150,000–200,000 VND per day — the most practical way to reach outlying flower valleys and waterfalls.
- Best time: November to March brings the dry season and the annual Da Lat Flower Festival, held every two years.
