About Bariloche centro

Bariloche Centro: Alpine Architecture on Nahuel Huapi

Bariloche Centro is the downtown core of San Carlos de Bariloche, on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi in Río Negro province, Patagonia. The neighborhood is anchored by the Centro Cívico, a complex of stone-and-log government buildings completed in 1940 and designed by architect Alejandro Bustillo in a Tyrolean-influenced style. Calle Mitre, the main commercial avenue, runs east–west through the centro and is lined with chocolate shops, outdoor gear stores, and restaurants.

The city draws skiers heading to Cerro Catedral, 20 km southwest — South America's largest ski resort, operating from late June through early October. In summer, hikers use Bariloche Centro as a base for trails into Nahuel Huapi National Park, established in 1934 as Argentina's oldest national park. The lakefront Costanera promenade connects the civic center to the port, where catamarans depart for Isla Victoria and the arrayán forest on the Quetrihué Peninsula.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bariloche Airport (BRC) sits 14 km east of the centro; taxis reach downtown in roughly 20 minutes.
  • Getting around: Local bus líneas connect the centro to Cerro Catedral and Puerto Pañuelo.
  • Best seasons: July–August for skiing; December–March for hiking and lake activities.
  • Currency: Argentine peso; USD and cards are widely accepted in tourist-facing businesses.
