About El Calafate
El Calafate: Gateway to Patagonia's Ice Fields
El Calafate sits on the southern shore of Lago Argentino in Santa Cruz province, roughly 320 km from the Chilean border. The town of around 25,000 residents exists largely because of Perito Moreno Glacier — a 250 km² ice mass inside Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1981. The glacier advances roughly 2 metres per day and calves towers of ice into the lake's Canal de los Témpanos, a spectacle that draws visitors year-round.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Avenida del Libertador General San Martín, the main strip, and in the quieter Barrio Residencial east of the centre. Properties range from lakefront lodges above the Brazo Norte to compact guesthouses within walking distance of bus terminals. Most hotels are open August through April; a smaller number operate through the Patagonian winter.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: El Calafate Airport (FTE) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires (Aeroparque) in roughly 3 hours.
- Best season: October to April for milder temperatures; July offers quieter roads and occasional glacier-front snow.
- Park access: Los Glaciares National Park entrance fee applies per person; book glacier trekking permits weeks ahead in high season.
- Currency: Carry Argentine pesos; card acceptance is inconsistent at smaller restaurants.
