The most practical bases in Buenos Aires are Palermo for restaurants, parks, and nightlife; San Telmo for tango culture and weekend markets; Recoleta for tree-lined avenues near the famous cemetery and upscale hotels; and Microcentro for business travel and the Casa Rosada. Most visitors stay five to seven nights. Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) is roughly 35 km southwest, about 45 minutes by taxi or Tienda León shuttle.

Palermo splits into Palermo Soho (independent restaurants, concept stores) and Palermo Hollywood (media agencies, cocktail bars). Both suit travelers who want walkable dining and late nights. San Telmo, centered on Plaza Dorrego, hosts an antiques fair every Sunday and milonga venues most evenings — it suits travelers prioritizing tango and colonial architecture. Recoleta anchors around the Cementerio de la Recoleta (opened 1822) and Avenida Alvear; its hotels lean toward 4- and 5-star properties. Puerto Madero, the converted docklands east of Microcentro, offers riverside hotels with quieter streets.

Getting Around

Buenos Aires runs six metro lines (Subte, operating since 1913 — the oldest in Latin America). The Red SUBE card covers Subte, buses, and suburban trains on one rechargeable card. Remis (licensed radio taxis) and ride-share apps are widely used after midnight when Subte closes.
