About Manaus
Manaus: Gateway to the Central Amazon Basin
Manaus sits at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River, 1,500 km inland from the Atlantic coast in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The city of roughly 2.2 million is the largest urban centre in the Amazon region and serves as the primary departure point for river expeditions into the world's largest tropical rainforest. Its signature landmark, the Teatro Amazonas opera house, opened in 1896 during the rubber boom and remains one of South America's most recognisable 19th-century buildings, topped by a dome clad in 36,000 painted ceramic tiles.

The Ponta Negra neighbourhood, 13 km north of the centre, offers waterfront hotels along the Rio Negro beach and sits closer to the Aeroporto Internacional Eduardo Gomes.
