About Mahone Bay
Mahone Bay: Three Churches and a Sheltered Harbour
Mahone Bay sits on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, roughly 75 km southwest of Halifax along Highway 3. The town's defining image — three 19th-century churches (St. James Anglican, Trinity United, and St. John's Lutheran) reflected in the calm water of the bay — has made it one of the most photographed streetscapes in Atlantic Canada. The sheltered harbour holds more than 365 islands, a number local tradition ties to the days when the bay concealed pirate vessels.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Accommodations centre on Main Street and the surrounding residential streets, with heritage inns and B&Bs outnumbering larger hotels. UNESCO-designated Lunenburg lies 8 km south and is reachable in under 15 minutes by car, making Mahone Bay a quieter base for exploring both towns. Chester, another sailing village, sits 24 km to the northeast.
Practical Tips
- Best season: July–September for sailing regattas and the Wooden Boat Festival (held each August).
- Getting there: No regional bus service; a rental car from Halifax is the practical option.
- Pack layers: Evening temperatures on the harbour drop noticeably even in summer.
- Parking: Free street parking along Main Street; fills by midday on weekends in July and August.
