About Saint Andrews

St. Andrews: New Brunswick's Loyalist Shore Resort Town

St. Andrews by-the-Sea sits at the tip of the Chamcook Peninsula in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, where the St. Croix River meets Passamaquoddy Bay. Founded by United Empire Loyalists in 1783, it ranks among Canada's oldest resort towns. The compact downtown grid — laid out by those original settlers — is lined with heritage clapboard buildings, many dating to the 19th century. Water Street anchors the commercial core, running parallel to the waterfront and within a 10-minute walk of the Kingsbrae Garden, a 27-acre horticultural estate opened in 1998.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters near the waterfront and along Joe's Point Road. The Algonquin Resort, a 1889 Tudor-style landmark on Algonquin Drive, defines the upper tier. Smaller inns and B&Bs occupy the residential streets one block inland. Whale-watching season (July–October) drives peak demand, when North Atlantic right whales feed in the bay.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: St. Andrews is 100 km southwest of Fredericton via Route 1; no passenger rail service.
  • Season: July and August are warmest; pack a layer for bay breezes even in summer.
  • Day trips: The Huntsman Aquarium on Brandy Cove Road is 2 km from Water Street.
