About Quebec City

Quebec City: Fortified Capital on the St. Lawrence

Quebec City is the only walled city north of Mexico in North America, its 17th-century ramparts encircling Old Quebec (Vieux-Québec), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The Château Frontenac, completed in 1893, rises above the cliff separating the Upper Town (Haute-Ville) from the Lower Town (Basse-Ville) and the waterfront district of Petit-Champlain. The city sits on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, roughly 270 km northeast of Montreal.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate within or just outside the Old City walls. Grande Allée and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighborhood offer mid-range and boutique options a short walk from the ramparts. Visitors attending the Quebec Winter Carnival (held each February since 1955) book rooms months in advance — this is the largest winter festival in the world by attendance.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) is 16 km west of Old Quebec; taxis run about CAD 40.
  • Getting around: Old Quebec is walkable; the funiculaire connects Haute-Ville to Petit-Champlain for CAD 4.
  • Language: French is the primary language; English is widely understood in hotels and tourist areas.
  • Best seasons: July–August for festivals; February for Carnaval; late September for fall foliage along the Montmorency Falls corridor.
