About Santiago

Santiago: Andean Capital at 520 Metres Above Sea Level

Santiago sits in a central valley flanked by the Andes to the east and the Coastal Range to the west, at an elevation of 520 m. Founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia, the city is home to roughly 7 million people in greater metropolitan Santiago — nearly 40% of Chile's population. The Plaza de Armas, the original colonial square, anchors the Centro Histórico, while the financial district of Sanhattan (Las Condes) rises with glass towers 10 km east. The hilltop park Cerro San Cristóbal offers unobstructed views of the full Andean snowline on clear winter mornings.

Where to Stay in Santiago

Most visitors base themselves in Providencia or Las Condes for walkable dining and metro access. Bellavista, north of the Mapocho River, concentrates independent restaurants and the house-museum of poet Pablo Neruda, La Chascona (opened 1953). Barrio Italia draws design-minded travellers to its antique shops and specialty coffee roasters along Avenida Italia. The Metro de Santiago, operating since 1975, covers seven lines and connects all major hotel zones to the airport bus terminal at Pajaritos station.

Practical Tips

  • Best visibility: Andes views are sharpest June–August after rain clears smog.
  • Transit: Metro Line 1 runs from San Pablo to Los Dominicos and passes all central districts.
  • Currency: Chilean peso (CLP); ATMs widespread in Providencia and Las Condes.
  • Altitude: At 520 m, altitude is not a concern arriving from sea level.
