About Valparaíso
Valparaíso: Hillside Port City of Painted Stairways
Valparaíso sits 120 km northwest of Santiago on Chile's central coast, spreading across 42 steep cerros (hills) that drop toward a working Pacific container port. The city became a major stopover on the Cape Horn route in the 19th century, and that era of prosperity left a grid of Victorian warehouses in the lower Plan district and a tangle of funicular lifts — ascensores — linking the flatlands to hilltop neighborhoods. UNESCO listed the historic quarter in 2003. Street murals cover nearly every retaining wall on Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, the two hills most visited by travelers arriving from Santiago.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses concentrate on Cerro Alegre, within walking distance of Pasaje Apolo galleries and the Paseo Yugoslavo viewpoint. Budget hostels cluster near Plaza Sotomayor in the Plan. A secondary strip of boutique stays runs along Urriola and Pilcomayo streets on Cerro Concepción.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Turbus and Pullman run buses from Santiago's Alameda terminal every 15 minutes; journey time is roughly 1.5 hours.
- Getting around: Eleven of the original 30 ascensores still operate; fares are under 100 CLP.
- Currency: Chilean peso; ATMs are common on Avenida Pedro Montt.
- Weather: Coastal fog is common June–August; pack a layer even in summer.
