About Liberec
Liberec: Northern Bohemia's Industrial Capital Beneath Ještěd
Liberec sits in the Liberec Basin at the foot of the Jizera Mountains, 100 km north of Prague near the German and Polish borders. The city built its fortune on textile manufacturing in the 19th century, and that legacy shapes its architecture today — the Town Hall (1893), modelled on Vienna's Rathaus, and the North Bohemian Museum anchor the compact historic core around náměstí Dr. E. Beneše. The Ještěd Tower, perched 1,012 m above sea level on a ridge southwest of the city, received the Auguste Perret Prize in 1969 for its fusion of broadcast transmitter and hotel into a single hyperboloid structure.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster within walking distance of the main square or along Sokolovské náměstí. Business travellers use Liberec as a base for the Liberec Economic Zone, while leisure visitors arrive for skiing at Ještěd ski resort in winter and hiking the Jizera Mountains in summer. The city also hosts the annual Liberec International Film Festival each October.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct trains from Prague take roughly 1 hour 45 minutes via Mladá Boleslav.
- Getting around: Tram lines 2 and 3 connect the railway station to the city centre in under 10 minutes.
- Ještěd access: A cable car runs from Horní Hanychov to the summit; allow 30 minutes from the centre by tram and foot.
- Currency: Czech koruna (CZK); card payments widely accepted in central hotels and restaurants.
