About Plzeň
Plzeň: Brewery Capital of Bohemia
Plzeň (Pilsen), 90 km southwest of Prague, gave the world pilsner lager in 1842 when the Pilsner Urquell Brewery first produced its pale bottom-fermented beer. That brewery still operates on U Prazdroje street and draws visitors into its 9 km of sandstone cellars, where lagering tanks remain at 1–2 °C year-round. The Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew anchors the Republic Square (náměstí Republiky), one of the largest historic squares in Bohemia at roughly 139 × 193 metres.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster within walking distance of náměstí Republiky and the brewery district east of the old town. The Lochotín neighbourhood to the northwest offers quieter options near the zoo and amphitheatre. Plzeň served as European Capital of Culture in 2015, and several renovated properties date from that investment period.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct trains from Prague hlavní nádraží run every hour; journey time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
- Brewery tours: Book the Pilsner Urquell underground tour at least one day ahead, especially April–October.
- Currency: Czech koruna (CZK); most central hotels accept cards but smaller restaurants may not.
- Local transit: Trams 1, 2, and 4 connect the main railway station to the old town in under 10 minutes.
