About Olomouc

Olomouc: Baroque Fountains and Moravian University Life

Olomouc is the historical capital of Moravia, sitting on the Morava River in the eastern Czech Republic, roughly 77 km northeast of Brno. The city's UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column (1716–1754) anchors Horní náměstí, one of Central Europe's largest main squares. Six Baroque fountains dot the old town — more than any other Czech city outside Prague. Olomouc escaped the heavy industrialisation that reshaped much of Moravia, leaving a compact medieval core largely intact.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster within or just outside the historic city walls, putting guests within walking distance of Olomouc Castle, the Přemyslid Palace, and the St. Wenceslas Cathedral. The Palacký University district, Central Europe's second-oldest university (founded 1573), draws academics and younger travellers who prefer guesthouses along Denisova and Wurmova streets. A handful of design hotels have opened inside renovated burgher houses since 2015.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct trains from Prague take roughly 2 hours 20 minutes; from Brno, under 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Getting around: The old town is walkable in under 20 minutes end to end; tram lines 1–6 link the centre to outlying districts.
  • Best time to visit: May through September for open-air markets on Horní náměstí; December for the Advent market rated among the top in the Czech Republic.
  • Local food: Try olomoucké tvarůžky — a pungent aged cheese with protected geographical status, produced in the region since the 15th century.
