About Siwa
Siwa: Desert Oasis at Egypt's Western Edge
Siwa Oasis sits 560 km west of Cairo, close to the Libyan border in the Great Sand Sea. The settlement dates back millennia — Alexander the Great consulted the Oracle Temple of Amun here in 331 BC, and that temple still stands at Aghurmi, 4 km from the modern town center. Roughly 30,000 Berber-speaking Siwans live among dense groves of date palms and olive trees, giving the oasis a character distinct from anywhere else in Egypt.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster near Siwa Town and along the edge of Lake Birket Siwa, a saline lake where travelers soak at dusk. Eco-lodges built from kershef (salt rock and mud) are the signature accommodation style — properties like those near Fatnas Island offer reed-hut terraces overlooking the salt flats. Options range from basic guesthouses to mid-range desert lodges; five-star infrastructure does not exist here.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses run daily from Cairo's Turgoman terminal; the journey takes roughly 9 hours. Private transfers from Marsa Matruh (300 km north) cut that to 3 hours.
- Best season: October to April, when daytime temperatures drop below 30 °C. Summer heat regularly exceeds 40 °C.
- Currency: Card payments are rare — carry Egyptian pounds in cash.
- Dress: Conservative clothing is expected in Siwa Town; swimwear is acceptable only at private lodge pools.
