Siwa Oasis sits 560 km west of Cairo and 50 km from the Libyan border, deep in the Western Desert of Egypt. The Temple of the Oracle of Amun, where Alexander the Great sought divine legitimacy in 331 BC, still stands at Aghurmi. The ruins of the ancient mud-brick settlement Shali Fortress, partially dissolved by three days of rain in 1926, rise above the modern town centre.

Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses near the central market to eco-lodges on the edge of Lake Siwa and Birket Zeitoun. Most hotels cluster within walking distance of Siwa Town. Visitors move around by donkey cart or rented bicycle — motorised traffic is limited by local custom. The nearest paved road connects to Marsa Matruh on the Mediterranean coast, 300 km north, via a 4-hour drive.
