Dijon is the capital of the Côte-d'Or department and the historic capital of Burgundy, located in eastern France roughly 310 km southeast of Paris by road. The city built its reputation on two pillars: wine and mustard. The surrounding Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune vineyards — classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015 — produce some of the world's most valuable Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Dijon mustard, made with brown mustard seeds and white wine, has been produced here since at least the 13th century.

Visitors come for the medieval and Renaissance architecture concentrated in the old town. The Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne, once home to the powerful Valois Dukes of Burgundy, anchors the central Place de la Libération. The Musée des Beaux-Arts inside the palace holds one of France's largest fine art collections, free to enter since 2019. The covered market Les Halles, designed by Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1875, operates Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings. Food tourism drives a significant share of visits — the annual Fête de la Gastronomie and the Dijon International Food and Wine Festival (held each November) draw tens of thousands of attendees.

Dijon is served by TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately 1 hour 35 minutes. The city centre is compact and walkable; the old town owl trail (La Chouette) marks a self-guided route past 22 key monuments.
