About Èze
Èze: Medieval Village Above the Côte d'Azur
Èze perches at 427 metres on a rocky promontory in the Alpes-Maritimes, midway between Nice (11 km west) and Monaco (8 km east). The village dates to the 14th century, and its stone-paved lanes, rampart walls, and cactus garden at the ruined château have made it one of the most-visited hilltop sites on the French Riviera. The Jardin Exotique d'Èze, planted in the 1950s at the summit, frames panoramic views across the Mediterranean to Corsica on clear days.
Where to Stay in Èze
Hotels concentrate in two zones: the perched village (Èze-Village) and the lower coastal strip Èze-sur-Mer, which sits directly on the Grande Corniche and has a small pebble beach. The village holds a handful of boutique properties — including Château Eza, occupying a 14th-century princely residence — while the seafront offers larger options closer to the train station.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Frequent trains from Nice-Ville to Èze-sur-Mer take 15 minutes; a steep footpath (the Nietzsche Path, named after Friedrich Nietzsche who walked it in the 1880s) climbs 40 minutes to the village.
- Parking: Village access by private car is restricted; a shuttle runs from the lower car park.
- Season: July and August bring peak crowds; April–June offers mild temperatures with fewer visitors.
- Currency and language: Euro (EUR); French is the primary language, English widely understood in hotels.
