Few cities on the French Riviera command attention quite like Cannes. Synonymous with glamour, sun-drenched promenades, and the world's most celebrated film festival, this elegant Côte d'Azur gem delivers far more than its celebrity reputation suggests. Whether you're drawn by the glittering Mediterranean, the historic hilltop lanes of Le Suquet, or the prospect of a luxury hotel on the Croisette, Cannes rewards every type of traveller with warmth, beauty, and unmistakable French style.
No visit to Cannes is complete without a stroll along the Boulevard de la Croisette, the iconic seafront promenade that stretches for nearly two kilometres between sandy beaches and a parade of grand palace hotels, designer boutiques, and sun-terrace cafés. This is the beating heart of the city — where film stars pose during the festival in May, and where ordinary days feel quietly extraordinary for the rest of the year. At the western end of the Croisette stands the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the legendary venue that hosts the Cannes Film Festival each spring and serves as a major conference and events centre year-round. The famous red-carpeted steps outside are a favourite photo stop even when no festival is in session.
Behind the glamour of the seafront, the covered Forville Market offers a more grounded slice of Cannes life. Open most mornings, this bustling provençal market brims with seasonal produce, olives, fresh herbs, cheeses, and flowers — a wonderful place to soak up the rhythms of local daily life and pick up a picnic before heading to the beach.
Perched on a hill overlooking the bay, Le Suquet is Cannes' original old town and its most atmospheric quarter. Narrow cobbled lanes wind upward past pastel-coloured houses, neighbourhood restaurants, and artisan shops toward the 11th-century Château and the Tour du Suquet, which offers sweeping panoramic views across the Croisette, the bay, and the Îles de Lérins. The Musée de la Castre, housed within the château walls, displays an eclectic collection of Mediterranean and world antiquities. Le Suquet is at its most enchanting in the early evening, when golden light settles over the rooftops and the restaurants begin to fill.
Just a short ferry ride from the Vieux Port, the Îles de Lérins offer a serene counterpoint to the bustle of the city. The two main islands — Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat — are havens of pine forest, rocky coves, and clear turquoise water. Sainte-Marguerite is famous for the Fort Royal, where the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned in the 17th century. Saint-Honorat, smaller and quieter, is home to a working Cistercian monastery whose monks produce wine and liqueurs sold on the island. Both islands are ideal for walking, swimming, and picnicking, and make a perfect half-day excursion from Cannes.
Cannes is well connected and straightforward to reach. The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, approximately 25–30 kilometres to the east, with frequent train and bus connections into the city. Cannes Station sits centrally and links the city directly to Nice, Monaco, Antibes, and Marseille via the scenic coastal railway line. Trains are generally the most convenient and affordable way to travel along the Riviera.
The best time to visit depends on your priorities. May brings the excitement of the Cannes Film Festival, with a vibrant atmosphere but higher prices and busy hotels — book well in advance if travelling then. June through September offers the classic Mediterranean summer experience with warm seas and long sunny days. Spring and autumn are ideal for a quieter, more affordable visit with pleasant weather. Accommodation ranges from legendary luxury hotels on the Croisette to charming boutique properties and sea-view hotels throughout the city, with options to suit most budgets outside peak season.
