About Dresden
Dresden: Baroque Capital on the Elbe
Dresden stands on the Elbe River in the eastern German state of Saxony, roughly 120 km south of Berlin. The city is defined by its 18th-century baroque skyline, rebuilt after the February 1945 firebombing that destroyed much of the historic core. The Frauenkirche, completed in its original form in 1743 and painstakingly reconstructed by 2005, anchors the Altstadt and draws visitors from across Europe. Directly alongside it, the Zwinger Palace complex houses three major museums, including the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister — one of Europe's oldest collections of Old Master paintings.
Where to Stay in Dresden
Most hotels concentrate in two areas. The Altstadt (Old Town) places guests within walking distance of the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper opera house, and the Residenzschloss. The Neustadt, north of the Elbe across the Augustusbrücke, offers a younger neighbourhood with independent restaurants, bars along Louisenstraße, and mid-range hotels at lower price points. Both areas are well connected by tram lines 3, 7, and 8.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The DVB tram network covers central Dresden efficiently; a 24-hour ticket costs around €7.
- Museum passes: The Dresden Card grants unlimited public transit plus entry to Zwinger museums for 48 or 72 hours.
- Best timing: The Striezelmarkt, Germany's oldest Christmas market, runs late November through December on Altmarkt square.
- River access: Elbe steamboat cruises operate from the Terrassenufer pier, April through October.
