About Leipzig
Leipzig: Bach, Battles, and a Book-Fair City
Leipzig sits in the heart of Saxony, roughly 160 km southwest of Berlin and 120 km northwest of Dresden. The city of 620,000 is where Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor at the Thomaskirche from 1723 until his death in 1750 — the church and its boys' choir still perform his cantatas weekly. The 1813 Battle of the Nations, the largest battle in Europe before World War I, was fought on fields now marked by a 91-metre stone monument southeast of the centre. Leipzig's Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, is among the world's oldest civic concert institutions.
Where to Stay in Leipzig
Most hotels cluster around the Innenstadt ring, within walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof — one of Europe's largest terminus stations by floor area. The Südvorstadt district, south of the centre, draws younger travellers with its dense café scene along Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The Plagwitz neighbourhood, a former industrial quarter west of the Elster canals, has converted mill buildings hosting galleries and boutique accommodation.
