Konstanz: Where the Rhine Leaves Lake Constance

Konstanz sits at the western tip of Lake Constance (Bodensee), at the precise point where the Rhine resumes its course toward Basel. The city straddles the German-Swiss border — the Kreuzlingen crossing is roughly 500 m from the Altstadt — and was spared wartime bombing because pilots could not distinguish it from Swiss territory at night. That accident of geography left intact a medieval streetscape of half-timbered facades, Romanesque towers, and the Konstanzer Münster, a cathedral whose foundations date to the 10th century. Inside the Münster, a stone marks where the Council of Constance (1414–1418) convened — the only ecumenical council held north of the Alps, which ended the Western Schism and condemned the reformer Jan Hus.

Petershausen, 10 minutes on foot west of the main station, suits travelers who prioritize rail access — Konstanz Bahnhof connects to Zürich in 70 minutes and Stuttgart in roughly two hours via the Schwarzwaldbahn.
