About Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg im Breisgau: Gateway to the Black Forest

Freiburg im Breisgau sits at the southwestern edge of Germany, where the Black Forest meets the Upper Rhine Plain, 70 km north of Basel and roughly 30 km from the French border. Founded in 1120, the city is anchored by the Freiburger Münster, a Gothic cathedral whose 116-metre sandstone spire has defined the skyline for over 700 years. The Bächle — narrow medieval water channels running through the old town's cobbled streets — remain one of the most distinctive urban features in any German city. The Altstadt survived partial wartime destruction and was rebuilt with its medieval street pattern intact.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster in or near the Altstadt, within walking distance of the Münster and the daily market on Münsterplatz. The Stühlinger district, immediately west of the central station, offers lower rates with tram access to the old town in under five minutes. Visitors heading to the Black Forest often use Freiburg as a base: the Schauinsland cable car departs from the suburb of Horben, about 10 km south, and reaches 1,284 metres.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The tram network (Straßenbahn) covers the city centre and suburbs; single tickets cost around €2.50.
  • Climate: Freiburg records Germany's highest annual sunshine hours — around 1,800 — making spring and autumn viable alternatives to summer.
  • Day trips: Basel is 45 minutes by regional train; Colmar in Alsace is 40 minutes.
