Chania: Venetian Harbour City on Crete's Northwest Coast

Chania (Χανιά) sits at the northwestern tip of Crete, 145 km west of Heraklion, and ranks as the island's second-largest city. The Venetian Harbour, built in the 13th century, defines the old town — its lighthouse, restored arsenal buildings, and curved breakwater draw more visitors than any other site in western Crete. Behind the waterfront, the Splantzia and Topanas quarters layer Ottoman mosques, Venetian loggia, and neoclassical mansions along lanes barely two metres wide.

Travellers arrive for the harbour, the beaches of Nea Chora and Kalathas (8 km east), and access to the Samaria Gorge — a 16 km hiking trail through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) that opens annually in May and closes in October. The city also serves as a base for day trips to the Balos lagoon (55 km northwest) and the Elafonisi pink-sand beach (75 km south). Ferry connections link Chania's port at Souda (7 km east) to Piraeus overnight.
